💧 Dehydration in Dogs – How to Recognize and React
Water is life — for dogs too. Dehydration can be dangerous and even life-threatening if left untreated. Here's how to recognize it early and respond correctly.

Signs of dehydration in dogs:
- Dry or sticky nose
- Lethargy or weakness
- Dull or rough coat
- Vomiting or constipation
- Skin loses elasticity (skin tent test)
- Sunken eyes, dry gums
Skin tent test:
Gently pinch and lift the skin on your dog's neck. If the skin doesn't snap back immediately, dehydration may be present.
What to do if your dog is dehydrated:
- Provide access to fresh, cool water at all times
- Avoid exercise during hot weather
- Offer unseasoned broth to encourage drinking
- In severe cases: go to the vet immediately (IV fluids may be necessary)
When is dehydration most likely?
- During hot days
- After vomiting or diarrhea
- In puppies and senior dogs
- While traveling (especially if the dog refuses to drink)
